Inspired by the Jerome Robbins ballet Fancy Free and its later incarnation On the Town, I was interested in continuing to yank the character of a sailor through time. Sourcing imagery from a cityscape, Nic traces the Empire State Building with his feet, outlines the Flat Iron Building with his arms and, with arms overhead, becomes the Chrysler Building. Indulging our shared passion for old movie musicals, there are soft shoe references and ballroomesque passages evoking war, nostalgia, memory, coming of age, missing and death. This excerpt is from the last of four movements. Created for and Performed by Nic Lincoln.
